My Family’s Experience at Tenebrae

Last Holy Wednesday, my family and I attended a Tenebrae service, a traditional Christian observance held in Catholic, Anglican, and Lutheran churches. As we entered the dimly lit sanctuary, a sense of reverence filled the air, setting the tone for the solemn ceremony ahead.

The service began with readings from the Old Testament, Psalms, and the Gospels, recounting the events leading to Jesus Christ’s crucifixion and burial. Each passage served as a reminder of the sacrifice made for humanity’s redemption.

As the readings progressed, candles were gradually extinguished, symbolizing the growing darkness that surrounded Jesus in his final hours. With each flicker of light put out, a perceivable sense of seriousness descended upon the congregation, echoing the dark mood of the occasion.

Throughout the service, the responsories, hymns, and antiphons echoed throughout the church, contributing to the solemn atmosphere. The quietness around us seemed to reflect our shared feelings, making the moment even more impactful.

As the final candle was extinguished, the church was enveloped in complete darkness, symbolizing the profound darkness that fell upon the earth at the moment of Jesus death.

Suddenly, a loud noise broke the silence, surprising us momentarily. It was a symbolic gesture, representing the earthquake that occurred at the moment of Christ’s death, as described in the Gospels. The sound served as a reminder of the seismic shift that occurred in the spiritual realm through Jesus sacrifice.

As we left the church that evening, our hearts heavy with the weight of what we had witnessed, we also carried with us a sense of hope and anticipation. For even in the midst of darkness, Tenebrae reminded us of the promise of Easter – the triumph of light over darkness, and the hope of redemption and new life found in the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Our experience at Tenebrae was a solemn yet profound journey, inviting us to enter into the mystery of Christ’s suffering and sacrifice. It was a reminder of the ultimate act of love that defines the essence of our faith, and a testament to the enduring power of the Easter message.
